SUN PROTECTION Tired of hearing about it, but a few things to think about

We are all tired of hearing about the importance of sunscreen, but we are in the sunny days of summer and like it or not, everyone should be using sunscreen.
I just want to tell you a few things to keep in mind....

1. SPF is misleading.
There is a proposal to cap the SPF at 50 based on research that anything higher is only slightly better and it is misleading to the consumer. SPF only pertains to UVB protection which are the burning rays. SPF of 15 blocks 93% of incoming rays; SPF 30 blocks 97%; and SPF 50 blocks 98%.
2. I think what is in the sunscreen is  more important than the SPF.You need a broad spectrum sunscreen which will protect against UVA & UVB.
My favorite sun screens have active ingredients of:
Titanium Dioxide & Zinc oxide which are physical blocks and Mexoryl XL.  These 3 are all UVA & UVB filters.
3.  No matter what the label says, every sunscreen should be reapplied every 2 hours if you are out in the sun.
4. Use antioxidant creams and serums to help prevent sun's rays from causing free radical damage.  Free radicals damage protein structures within cells and accelerate aging/ wrinkles.

The best way to make using sunscreen easy is to find one that doesn't smell or feel like a sunscreen. There are a number of nice choices... some so light and liquid, tinted for make up, moisturizing, some with antioxidants...the list goes on.
Brands I tend to recommend are Elta MD, Skin Ceuticals, Skin Medica, Obagi.
I beg you all to use sunscreen and encourage your family and friends. You will still get your vitamin D and a little tan through the sunscreen.

Hope this helps,
Liz
